New Delhi: Shaheen Shah Afridi, the renowned pace bowler from Pakistan, has graciously requested the team's management and selectors to exclude him from the upcoming Test matches. His decision is motivated by a desire to manage his workload effectively and maintain peak fitness for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled for February and March. Following the announcement of the squad for the two Tests in South Africa, which does not include Shaheen, Aaqib Javed, the interim head coach and chief selector, confirmed that they are closely monitoring the fast bowler's workload to prepare him for the prestigious tournament.
“The truth is Shaheen himself requested he not be considered for Test matches until the Champions Trophy is over,” a source said.
He shared that apparently, Shaheen sent word to the team management and the Pakistan board, notifying them about a substantial proposal from a squad in the Bangladesh Premier League. Assurances were also given that he would manage his responsibilities throughout the T20 league, which is programmed to happen from December 30 through to February 7.
“He assured the management and board the money was very good and he would look after his fitness and workload during the event so he should be permitted to play in the league,” the source said.
During this duration Pakistan will play two Tests in South Africa and two Tests at home against West Indies.
“Shaheen said he would be fully fit in time for the tri-series ODIs against New Zealand and South Africa followed by the Champions Trophy at home,” the source said.
“Shaheen told Aaqib he can be selected for tests once the Champions Trophy is completed,” he added.
