New Delhi: Delhi Capitals are said to be in discussions with former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh for a potential role in the coaching staff for the upcoming Indian Premier League season. This news comes after reports surfaced indicating that 2022 champions Gujarat Titans are also interested in having the two-time World Cup winner on their coaching staff. The Delhi Capitals have recently bid farewell to their head coach Ricky Ponting back in June.
Although Yuvraj doesn’t have any experience of coaching a team, but he mentored players like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. Following Ponting’s departure, it was reported that Sourav Ganguly will take charge of the senior team as head coach. However, questions remain as what position will be offered to Yuvraj if he comes on board. With Ganguly as the head coach, Yuvraj could fill in the position of a mentor.
Based on a Sporstar report, Delhi Capitals are keen to bring Yuvraj on board. The franchise, haven’t won an IPL since its inception in 2008. They finished sixth in IPL 2024 and failed to qualify for the playoffs in any of the last three seasons. Notably, Yuvraj had played for the Delhi Capitals in 2015 (then Delhi Daredevils) when he was bought for a whopping Rs 16 crore – the highest bid for any player at that time.
Under the leadership of JP Duminy, Delhi finished seventh in the eight-team affair in 2015. Yuvraj Singh scored 248 runs from 14 games, including two fifties
As far as Ponting is concerned, the Australian joined the Delhi Capitals in 2018. They finished at the bottom of the table in Ponting’s first year as coach before making a roaring comeback from 2019 to 2021 where team qualified for the playoffs for three consecutive years. They also played the final in 2020 under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer.
