New Delhi: The Sharjah Warriorz have announced the appointment of former South African all-rounder JP Duminy as their new head coach for the upcoming third season of the International League T20 (ILT20). Duminy will be taking over from his fellow Proteas teammate Johan Botha, who led the team in the previous edition of the tournament. Having had a successful T20 career, the 40-year-old Duminy was previously the batting coach for the Warriorz and will now be stepping into a more prominent leadership role as the head coach. His experience and expertise are expected to bring a new dynamic to the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
With over 15 years of international cricket experience, Duminy is regarded as one of the finest T20 cricketers. The left-handed batter amassed 8,331 runs in 345 matches at a strike rate of over 120 and picked up 99 wickets with his right-arm off-break bowling. His vast experience includes stints in the IPL, CPL, and PSL, where he played for teams like Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Islamabad United, showcasing his all-round skills in various franchise leagues.
Duminy’s familiarity with UAE conditions, having played extensively in the region, along with his knowledge of the Warriorz’ setup, makes him well-positioned to guide the team into a successful ILT20 season. Earlier in 2023, Duminy was also appointed as the batting coach for South Africa’s white-ball teams, where his expertise contributed to South Africa’s remarkable batting performances at the ODI World Cup in India. Additionally, he has served as the head coach of Paarl Royals in the SA20 league and Boland Rocks in South Africa’s domestic circuit.
Reflecting on his new role, Duminy expressed his excitement about taking on the head coach position, stating, “I am delighted to take up the challenge of being the head coach with the Sharjah Warriorz. This is an excellent set-up, vibrant and full of optimism. We are looking forward to building a strong squad and seeing what lies in store for us this season.”
Kshemal Waingankar, COO of Capri Sports, shared his confidence in Duminy’s leadership, noting, “JP Duminy is one of the best minds in the business when it comes to leading the team from the front. We are excited for an action-packed season with him at the helm, and preparations are already underway for an exciting ILT20 season.”
With Duminy now steering the ship, Sharjah Warriorz are poised to make an impact in the upcoming ILT20 season, aiming to build a competitive squad and carry forward the momentum established under his leadership.
