Player Ratings: Man City triumph over Manchester United in Community Shield showdown

Manchester City claimed victory over Manchester United in a thrilling Community Shield showdown, managing to secure a late equalizer before emerging as the winners in a tense penalty shootout.

The Red Devils stunned the Premier League champions to win the FA Cup at the end of last season but it was not another fairytale for them at Wembley.

City started brilliantly but United came back into the match and created a number of good chances, finally taking one through substitute Alejandro Garnacho on 82 minutes.

That looked to have won it for Erik ten Hag’s side but Bernardo Silva had other ideas as he too rose from the bench to score, nodding in an Oscar Bobb cross two minutes before the whistle.

The match went straight to penalties and Silva immediately missed for City, but with Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans failing from the spot, Manuel Akanji scored the final spot-kick to claim a 7-6 win for Pep Guardiola’s men.

Manchester City

Ederson – 8/10

Wound up his manager by kicking the ball straight out of play just before half-time, with Guardiola throwing a water bottle to the floor in disgust. Made a brilliant save from Jadon Sancho in the shootout and then scored from 12 yards himself.

Josko Gvardiol – 5/10

Playing at left-back he was in a bit of bother against the impressive Amad in the first half and ultimately it was from his flank which Garnacho burst to score United’s goal.

Ruben Dias – 6/10

Took a whack in the face from a Bruno Fernandes shot in the first half but otherwise didn’t have an enormous amount to worry about as United weren’t fielding a recognised centre-forward. Solid enough.

Manuel Akanji – 6/10

Scored the winning penalty in the shootout after a steady showing at the back for the Premier League champions.

Rico Lewis – 7/10

Brilliant burst forward into the box from defence 20 minutes in and that showed just how wonderfully dynamic he is. The youngster pops up all over the place and really adds to City’s play going forward, while being solid enough at the back.

Mateo Kovacic – 6/10

Ticked along in midfield for the entire 90 minutes, but while City dominated play early on, they couldn’t really control the game as they would like to in the middle.

James McAtee – 5/10

Hit the post from a good chance after 24 mins after dreadful stuff at the back from United saw them give the ball away in their own third. Struggled to make much of an impact otherwise.

Nico O’Reilly – 5/10

The imposing teenager Nico O’Reilly didn’t really take his chance to impress for Manchester City, with the game largely passing him by in the middle of the pitch.

Jeremy Doku – 7/10

Looked dangerous on the left, with Diogo Dalot pleased to see him taken off on 63 minutes. The Belgian beat Dalot and Harry Maguire in a serious warning to United in the first half. Fired an effort just wide shortly before the break. Always liable to cause problems.

Erling Haaland – 5/10

Did very little indeed throughout the game, not looking like scoring at all or even getting involved in play much. However, his immense presence does occupy defenders and he did comfortably put away his penalty in the shootout.

Oscar Bobb – 8/10

Plenty of nice work on the right flank and the 21-year-old looks like he will be a more regular feature in the team this season. He was dangerous throughout and it was fine play late on which saw him provide the assist for Bernardo Silva to head home.

Substitutes

Savinho – 6/10

Looked very keen to impress and will clearly be a threat. Scored in the shootout.

Matheus Nunes – 6/10

Didn’t do a great deal after coming on 63 minutes in, but did score a sublime penalty in the shootout, finding the top corner.

Bernardo Silva – 6/10

Came on with 10 minutes to play and made his presence felt, firstly by clattering Garnacho, but more importantly by heading in a late equaliser. However, he saw his shootout penalty saved.

Nathan Ake – Came on at the death with little chance to contribute.

Kevin De Bruyne – Came on very late, but calmly scored his spot-kick.

Manchester United

Andre Onana – 7/10

Will be a big influence on Manchester United this season as they try and improve on playing out from the back, which he did well enough today, although there is room for improvement. Good save from Bernardo Silva from the spot.

Diogo Dalot – 6/10

Didn’t offer much of a threat going forward during the 90 minutes, but he did score in the shootout, squeezing his effort past Ederson. Had some trouble with Doku, especially in the first half.

Jonny Evans – 5/10

A solid enough performance at the back and helped keep Haaland almost silent, but then scooped his spot-kick over the bar pretty tamely.

Harry Maguire – 6/10

Injury scare early on after a heavy clash with Erling Haaland but he soldiered on and the Norwegian remained extremely quiet, which was a key task of Maguire before he was taken off on 58 minutes.

Lisandro Martinez – 5/10

Not really where he wants to be at left-back and did struggle with Oscar Bobb at times, but was committed as always. Doesn’t offer much of an attacking threat at all at full-back, did score his penalty though.

Kobbie Mainoo – 5/10

Neat and tidy as always in the middle of the park, but not especially dynamic.

Casemiro – 7/10

Involved in Manchester United’s most dangerous moments in the first half, knitting things together nicely. Clearly still has plenty to offer. Also scored his shootout effort.

Marcus Rashford – 5/10

Still nowhere near his best. Had a good chance on 37 minutes after he was played in but his curled effort was well wide. Hit the post with a wonderful chance after being sent through in by Alejandro Garnacho in the second half. He did provide a great chance for Scott McTominay by nodding the ball down to him, but the midfielder fluffed it.

Mason Mount – 4/10

Asked to play quite far forward alongside Bruno Fernandes, which is not his natural position, and did not have much impact at all.

Amad Diallo – 8/10

Manchester United’s chief threat before being removed just before the hour mark. The first bit of danger for City came from the winger cutting in from the right, beating his man but curling his effort round the post. Followed it up with a sublime piece of link-up play with Casemiro but tried to provide a tap-in for Mount and just got it wrong.

Bruno Fernandes – 8/10

A lot of nice touches when dropping into midfield but asked to play up front, which isn’t his game. Having said that, he scored an amazing goal from range but it was correctly ruled out for offside. When he got on the ball he looked really sharp and netted from the spot.

Substitutes

Facundo Pellistri – 4/10 Didn’t do a lot with his half hour on the pitch.

Scott McTominay – 5/10

Came on just before the hour and missed a fantastic chance to score from a Rashford knock down. Did then net in the shootout, though.

Alejandro Garnacho – 9/10

Scored the superb late winner having provided what should have been an excellent assist for Rashford shortly before, but the Englishman hit the post.

Great stuff for the goal as he cut in from the right and found the near bottom corner with his left foot. He then netted in the shootout to complete a brilliant showing.

Toby Collyer – 4/10 A largely forgettable cameo.

Jadon Sancho – Came on late with little chance to contribute in the game and then saw his spot-kick brilliantly saved by Ederson.
