Marco van Basten criticizes agent for forcing through £39m Manchester United transfer

Marco van Basten has publicly condemned Donny van de Beek's agent for facilitating the midfielder's move to Manchester United.

Van de Beek made the move to United in a £39 million deal from Ajax in September 2020 but the 27-year-old failed to make an impact during his time at Old Trafford.

The Dutch midfielder also had spells on loan at Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt before United allowed him to join Spanish side Girona for an initial €500,000 (£423,000) fee this summer.

‘His manager was a bad advisor in that. That step was much too big,’ Van Basten said of Van de Beek’s move to United on Ziggo Sport’s latest episode of Rondo.

‘As an agent, you have to be able to decide – I’m sending him to that club, because that’s where he’s going to play.

‘He went to two clubs and didn’t play a match.’

Van de Beek has made just one appearance as a substitute for Girona so far this season but provided an assist in the 4-0 win at home to Osasuna.

‘This was really a typical Van de Beek pass,’ Van Basten added.

Frank de Boer, who was part of the Rondo show alongside Van Basten, said: ‘It’s actually crazy, idiotic and strange that such a player has barely played football for two years.

‘Sometimes you have to join a club that suits you.

‘At Manchester United I saw him pick up balls on the left wing. I say… ‘you shouldn’t be doing that, you have to go for that goal’.’
